Heroines battled “The Terror,” and his ape-creature, and the bizarre animal-headed “Wolf Devil,” searched for buried treasure and fought for gold in Canada and the Arctic and dangerous adversaries in the West. In the epic and violent pre-censorship MASKED RIDER serial four women of different ages all rode horses, carried guns, and participated in the action. One of them was pioneering female film director Ruth Stonehouse. THE MASKED RIDER was the first major costumed action hero in a film bearing her character’s name, and a strong influence on Zorro.
