Adapted from the concluding chapters of The Return of Tarzan. This release is the full 10-chapter 1928 serial, the whole deal (not the cut-down feature version released by others which contains only the second half of the serial) and now includes the complete opening chapter prologue and the entire sequence of Jane being attacked by the witch doctor and his man-eating plant! Includes the long-lost Reel 1 of Chapter 1, a prologue which has never before been seen on video.

Geoffrey Mentor, a scientist, discovers the "secret of the air" which allows him to broadcast his voice to the entire world and threatens to sabotage all transportation and communication involving electrical energy in the world if countries do not disarm. His daughter Jean gets caught up in a plot by foreign spies to steal Mentor's secret and on their trail is Secret Service man Jack Deering, who tracks and fights the spies and falls in love with Jean. In the middle of all the action is the mysterious Man from Nowhere, who seems to know more than he's saying, and intervenes in times of difficulty.
The entire serial was shot by Ben Wilson as a silent, and audio was dubbed in post-production, much as modern films are made. The serial was, contrary to some reports, completed and released, but in only limited fashion as the proprietary sound system apparently had to travel with the film for exhibition.
This special collection includes the preserved transfer of the existing film reels, an audio drama version of the rest of the story, and a copy of the original script in book/PDF form.

THE KING OF THE KONGO

In 2004 matching up the existing audio disks with a transfer of this obscure late silent serial was discussed in the old Squadron chat room as were plans to restore it. Subsequently, somehow, those disks ended up in the hands of someone else. It's been quite a while since then and though multiple pledge drives have been run now for 20 years to take money from people to supposedly restore the serial, still no one has been able to see anything but a few clips of it. It's probably too late now for anyone even to care about this thing but we figure it's time to make as close to a complete copy as possible should be made available now while people who still want to see it are alive, whatever is being held hostage be damned!
The serial, as were most movies made c. 1930, was intended to showcase dialogue scenes, which were new at the time, and there are a lot in here and they slow down the pace a great deal. It's a historical period piece and not a lot more but it does have an early Karloff appearance as part of it and something of which serial and Karloff completists will want to have a copy. So we'll give you one.

This spunky and entertaining serial which includes GANG BUSTERS-style action and lots of snappy dialogue did not survive complete, and was missing some reels of audio and one or two of picture as well. New techniques are being used to replace, clean up, stabilize, restore and re-create missing content so the serial will feel complete again.
