In the Welsh countryside, an assortment of oddballs (Melvyn Douglas, Gloria Stuart, Charles Laughton, and Raymond Massey) seek refuge from a storm in an old house belonging to Ernest Thesiger (Dr. Pretorius in Bride of Frankenstein), in which ancient relatives apparently still survive and a fearsome-looking scarred butler (Boris Karloff) sometimes rages when he's had too much to drink. They share personal stories and and sudden attractions develop and are confessed. When the lights go out, a locked room is discovered, and so are an ancient lady and a dangerous pyromaniac. What this all means we don't really know but hey, this is pre-code horror and anything can happen.
