FRANKENSTEIN (1910) In color, visually noise reduced, transferred at the correct speed, stabilized, and newly scored. You will see details in this you never saw before. And it even gets a little scary at points because it doesn't move so fast or in a comical way.
PORTRAIT (1916) A subtle and surreal Russian short in which a man is compelled to take home a strange painting from an antique shop. This is scary too if you watch it in the dark with no distractions.
THE MISSION OF MR. FOO (Edison) Not really a horror film but more a fantasy of fear of the Mandarin Chinese. Probably the first "Fu Manchu" type character in the cinema.
THE MAD DOCTOR (1933) in color, a familiar-looking mouse tries to find his dog in a horror castle owned by a mad doctor who wants to do evil experiments. Pulled from release and its copyright not renewed because it frightened children in the movie theater.
MASCOT in THE DEVIL'S BALL (1933) An extended length, hallucinatory and surreal cartoon made by Russian animator Vladislaw Starewicz in which a toy puppy tries to find something to eat for a starving boy and ends up caught in a madhouse of animated figures supervised by the Devil. Really. First time in color.
SEVEN FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN (1927) in full color. The long-lost feature painstakingly restored and newly scored. Transferred at the proper 18fps speed so it lasts its full running time of 1 hour 15. This is not the color tinted version so you can take your pick. A bachelor with dreams of becoming a jungle explorer becomes distracted when he and his aspiring sweetheart are mysteriously kidnapped in a car and taken to the most bizarre house of horrors ever to appear in the movies. What in the world is going on in this apparent 1920s version of ROCKY HORROR? You'll find out at the end, after "Satan" demands the man participate in a devilish ritual to try to save the lady from apparent unimaginable tortures.
THE VAULT OF HORRORS ANTHOLOGY SERIES
VAULT OF HORRORS is an eclectic anthology series presenting new restorations of rarities such as the 1912 Edison FRANKENSTEIN, THE DEVIL's BALL, THE BLACK CAT featuring Conrad Veidt, and NOSFERATU (in color), along with cleaned-up and restored versions of oddball/horror-themed cartoons such as JASPER IN THE HAUNTED HOUSE and short feature films such as SEVEN FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN, WHITE ZOMBIE, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, THE OLD DARK HOUSE, and BEACH GIRLS AND THE MONSTER all in color. Which is digital color-conversion, not colorization, and toned down appropriately. The contents range from scary (PORTRAIT, CARNIVAL OF SOULS) to fantastic (THE DEVIL'S BALL, BALLOON LAND, ) to humorous as is the case with JASPER, THE METAL-EATING BIRD and LONDON BROIL AFTER MIDNIGHT (what?).
Volumes are 3 hours 45 to 4 hours 15 minutes long with about 7 segments in each of varying lengths from a few minutes for cartoons to a 75 minute features. Virtually everything included will be of higher quality than anything you've seen anywhere else.
There is no spoken dialogue in Volume 1; it all appears in intertitles so this project does not require any additional subtitles, so a good choice for the hearing-impaired.
