ISLE OF SUNKEN GOLD Vol. 2
(Mascot 1927)

This DVD includes restored English versions of the recently discovered lost middle chapters (4, 5, 6) of this obscure serial with a lush score of natural sound effects and native drums. Stars Anita Stewart, Bruce Gordon, Curtis "Snowball" McHenry and Kong the fanged ape, with a brief appearance by Duke Kahanamoku. Also includes the reel from Chapter 7 unrestored and silent as discovered for comparison.

This serial is notable for having content bearing strong similarities to the general setup of KING KONG, not to mention an ape with the same name who appeared in a film only about 5 years before production on KONG started. A shipwreck lands a sailor and crew on a remote island where they have trouble with the natives who worship the mysterious super-ape. The secondary island-man hero, played by Kahanamoku, was likely the inspiration for Ray Mala’s character in ROBINSON CRUSOE OF CLIPPER ISLAND. The token-black comic relief character in the serial played by McHenry (called “Possum”) has the distinction of being actually funny, a rarity in serialdom.

There may never be a volume 1 or 3 in this set but at least we are able to see these episodes, which may actually be the only examples of silent Mascot serial chapters in existence. Intertitles translated from the original Dutch.
