THE QUEEN OF SERIALS VS.
THE HORRIFIC HOODED TERROR!

"Tremendous serial! Tremendous fun! Tremendous restoration!" --Zolok, world-threatening arch-villain and climate change pioneer

The head of the house of Waldon, a factory tycoon and inventor of a metal-melting formula called liquid fire, is mysteriously murdered by a mysterious black-cowled madman known only as the Hooded Terror. When the will is read, his greedy relatives Haynes (John Webb Dillon), Ezra (French actor Paul Clerget), and Naomi (Peggy Shanor) are distressed to see he he has left all his money to his illegitimate daughter Pearl (Pearl White), "the only one who didn't wish for his death." Pearl's position as the new heir marks her as the next victim of the masked maniac, who lurks in secret passages in the castle, can bend steel with his bare hands, and attempts repeatedly to destroy Pearl, violently and unabashedly. Pearl fights back, however, and is not afraid to answer his attacks with a punch, a gunshot, or a crack of a chair over his head as attempted murder becomes a prolonged fight to the death between the two enemies. Pearl is supported in her quest to unmask and defeat the berserk, unstoppable Hooded Terror and his gang of underworld cutthroats by Harry Gresham, a scientist employed at her father's factory who loves her and fights by her side until the horrific and terrifying secret of the masked man's identity is finally revealed.

The great Pearl White is a joy to behold in this serial and shows she was a true triple threat -- she performs amazing stunts and in a dual role as a terrified condemned prisoner shows herself to have been a strong character actor as well, not to mention a funny comedienne when she impersonates a "good-time girl" to infiltrate the underworld. Get this serial and see why Pearl owned the movie serials in their early days.

Astute cinema fans will recognize
Louis Wolheim of All Quiet on the Western Front in an early role, and Pearl’s old nemesis Paul Panzer, from The Perils of Pauline also in the cast as the Warden of criminals on death row.

The House of Hate was shot in the days before Hollywood, in Fort Lee, New Jersey and the surrounding area, in December, 1917, with snow visible on the ground in most outdoor scenes. It is the only Pearl White cliffhanger serial which to be available on DVD near-complete and includes amazing cliff-hanging stunt work by Pearl herself and other cast members.

The condensation includes the first four chapters basically as they were originally released, then several chapters (6, 7 and 8) which combine the best of the action scenes from the middle of the serial, then the last two chapters present the key material from the last 3 chapters including the complete extended flashback which reveals the masked villain’s identity and his horrific origin. The middle chapters include a few moments which are not fully explained and a few written messages that were impossible to translate but the cliffhanging action scenes are still present -- you may have to imagine for yourself what those letters might have said, but that should not interfere with your enjoyment of the serial. What is not present in the condensation is padding having to do with German spies which was added to the serial to extend it from 15 to 20 chapters originally, and had nothing to do with the central story so the presentation is actually better, and closer to the script as originally conceived and written, without it!

Note: The picture quality on this serial is less than our usual standard but it has been stabilized, cleaned up and color tinted, with all-new titles added, and the overall presentation is of the quality you have come to expect of a Squadron release. Perhaps someday we will be able to get a transfer of the original and if we do we will offer an upgrade to this DVD but for now the historical value and cliffhanging thrills in this serial, not to mention being able to finally see Pearl White in a whole serial at the peak of her career, should more than compensate for any faults in the transfer.

"These episodes now have their own chapters and titles along with proper opening credits, Brilliantly re-translated from Russian back to English. Pearl White at her best, a great, involving soundtrack and plenty of action and excitement. A later episode on the DVD shows the [Fort Lee N.J.] "Cliffhanger Point" scene -- it is so nice to see this footage that I am sure will rewrite the history of serial films. This is a silent film lover's dream come true." -- Terry Harbin, President, Ithaca-Made Movies

"There is so much going on in this serial which is really impressive it would hard to casually catalog on the great visuals and action. Silent film buffs who would snub serials like this, Hope Diamond and Trail of the Octopus are really missing out." -- animator Dan Ross

"
The House of Hate is pretty amazing. I don't quite understand why these Serial Squadron DVDs aren't being hailed as major, essential releases. I've watched The Hope Diamond Mystery, The Trail of the Octopus and I'm two chapters in to The House of Hate. All three serials are not only enormously entertaining, but they elaborate on and change our preconceptions of silent-era films." -- playwright David Lee White

Note: This is a Serial Squadron exclusive copyrighted DVD release and at the moment absolutely NO other dealers are yet licensed to sell it. Do not encourage serial DVD bootlegging, order from the source, where the work was done on the project and the time was put in, and help us bring you more amazing rare titles such as THE HOUSE OF HATE for your collection!

The DVD: This is a 2- DVD set, digitally mastered from a lo-res transfer which is all that is currently available for this title, color-tinted, and with restored opening and closing titles, newly translated intertitles, and a new musical score and sound effects perfectly timed to enhance the release.
